Map Tales has its roots in a group I started deep in the mazes of Europe in 2013. The wildly popular Munich
Explorers Club (MEC)—modeled loosely after the Golden Days of Exploration when vainglorious waxed
mustaches would come together in smoke-filled parlors to boast of their journeys to the ends of the
Earth—brought together men and women from all walks of life with a common love for travel, stories,
and adventure. It gave ordinary people an opportunity they might not otherwise have to tell their own
travel stories on the big screen to an audience. For over a decade, the big screen at the MEC got
bombarded with a barrage of travel presentations from literally every corner of the planet (for a
condensed list of past presentation titles, click here). In short, ordinary people can have some truly
amazing stories. And there are countless more eager to hear those stories.
Now twelve years and 6000 miles later, it is my intent to somehow re-create—in the Wild West of
Arizona, USA—that inspirational atmosphere that once sparkled at the MEC in the “golden days” of
Europe not so long ago. Map Tales is not an app, and it is not a place to hide in virtual soup. Rather, it is a
physical community that aspires to foster the exchange of ideas, sharing of knowledge, entertainment, creativity,
inspiration, and ultimately, friendship.
Events will be held at Mother Road Brewery in downtown Flagstaff, and will include presentation
evenings, photo contest dinners, travel-related trivia competitions, raffles, and more.
